Birmingham - The Magic City

Nestled at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at the cross-section of two major railroads, the city was once the primary industrial center of the southern United States. At the height of the nation's manufacturing age, the city grew so fast in population, it was called the "Magic City." Today, Birmingham has transformed itself into a medical research, banking and service-based economy, making it one of the nation's most livable cities with a vibrant downtown, a burgeoning loft community, a world-class culinary scene and more green space per capita than any other city in the nation!

Birmingham also boasts 99 historic neighborhoods and is often referred to as the cradle of the American Civil Rights Movement. The average (high) temperature in the city is 65°; the average low is 51°. The city is centrally located in the southeast and easily accessible to major hubs in the region.

Some Fun Things to Do

Meyer Planetarium
The majestic silence of the stars has inspired not only scientific scrutiny, but also some of the world’s loveliest poetry and music. Down through the ages, people have found a source of profound thought in the vastness of the universe and its creations. In these days of smog-filled skies, it is reassuring to know that there is a place where one may still see clearly the brilliant nighttime heavens. Within reach of almost everyone in Birmingham and surrounding areas is the Robert R. Meyer Planetarium, located on the beautiful Birmingham-Southern campus. Although the planetarium sky is an artificial one, you can still feel as though you are sitting outdoors and gazing up at the stars.

Resting at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, DeSoto Caverns Park offers a unique destination for those seeking a fun and educational experience. Surrounding the caverns are over twenty exciting attractions, where guests can enjoy activities like panning for gemstones or navigating the giant Lost Trail Maze. Located only 36 miles from Birmingham, DeSoto Caverns Park is a natural wonder and a perfect setting for fun.

Birmingham Zoo
